Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves

The electromagnetic waves of frequency ranging from a few kilo hertz to a few hundred mega hertz are called radio waves. Electromagnetic or radio waves are oscillations of electric and magnetic field vectors perpendicular to each other as well as perpendicular to the direction of propagation of waves. The electromagnetic waves are of transverse nature and they propagate in free space with the velocity of light(3 × 10ms-1) as shown in the diagram.

There are two modes of propagation

i) Ground wave and space wave propagation

ii) Sky wave propagation.
