Co-ordination Compounds

Stability Importance and Applications

Stability :

The stability of complex in solution refers to the degree of association between the two species involved in the state of equilibrium. It is expressed as stability constant (K)

M^{+} \ + \ nL^{x-} \ \rightleftharpoons \ [ML_n]^{y-} \ ; \ K \ = \ \frac{[(ML_n)^{y-}]}{[M^{+}][L^{x-}]^{n}}

The factors on which stability of the complex depends:

(i) Charge on the central metal atom
(ii) Nature of metal ion
(iii) Basic nature of ligands

Importance and Applications of Co-ordination Compounds :

1. Hardness of water is estimated by simple titration.
2. Purification of metals can be achieved.
3. Used as catalyst for many industrial processes.

e.g. M^{+}+nL^{x-}\rightleftharpoons\left[ML_{n}\right]^{y-};\tt \ K =\frac{\left[\left(ML_{n}\right)^{y-}\right]}{\left[M^+\right]\left[L^{x-}\right]^n}
