Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Chemical Bonding: Ionic and Covalent Bonds

Chemical Bonding :
The force of attraction that hold two atoms or ions in a molecule together is called chemical bond.

Types of chemical bonds :

Ionic bond :
The strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions, which are formed electropositive element to electronegative element.

Factors influencing ionic bond formation :

Cation :

  • Large atomic size
  • Low ionization potential
  • low charge on cation
  • Cations with inert gas configuration.

Anion :

  • Small atomic size
  • High electronegativity
  • Less charge on anion.
