Respiration in Plants

Amphibolic pathway

Krebs cycle provides a number of intermediates which are used in different anabolic pathways to form certain important molecules such as aspartic acid, glutamic acid, etc;

Acetyl 6-A produces certain compounds for the synthesis of fatty acids , aromatic compounds, steroids, gibberellins etc;

Hence krebs cycle is considered as amphibolic pathway where it is used for catabolism and anabolism:

Balance sheet of ATP

STAGE ATP BY SUBSTRATE LEVEL PHOSPHORYLATION FORMATION OF NADH/FADH2 ATP THORUGH ETS IN MITOCHONDRIA
Glycolysis 2 2 NADH 2 × 3 = 6
Formation of Acetyl CoA - 2 NADH 2 × 3 = 6
Krebs cycle 2 2 FADH2 2 × 2 = 4
  4 6 NADH 6 × 3 = 18
      34 (or) 32

 Total net gain of ATP = 36 or 38 (Depending on the type of aerobic respiration)
