Differentiation, dedifferentiation and redifferentiation

Differentiation, De differentiation and re-differentiation :

  • Differentiation is a permanent localized qualitative change in size, biochemistry, structure and function of cells, tissues and organs, Eg. fibre, vessel, Tracheid, sieve tube etc ;
  • The reason for different types of cells and tissues formation from the same type of meristematic cells is commitment (or) determination.
  • The process of despecialization of differentiated cells so that they become undifferentiated and able to divide is known as dedifferentiation, which is due to activation of certain genes which not only reverse differentiation but also stimulates cell division.
  • Cell culture experiments based on dedifferentiation of cells to form callus. The cells produced from dedifferentiated cells that mature and form redifferentiated cells. Eg. secondary xylem elements.
