Photosynthesis in Higher Plants

Photorespiration

  • The process involves there organelles namely chloroplast, Peroxisome and Mitochondria using the enzyme RuBisCO that acts as Ribulose Biphosphate oxygenase under the increased concentration of O2.
  • The enzyme splits one molecule of RUBP into 3-PGA and 2-Phosphoglycolic acids from which glycolic acid is formed in chloroplast which is then transported to peroxisome to convert it into glycine.
  • Glycine is later transported into Mitochondria, which is further converted into serine and releases CO2 as a by-product.
  • The amino acid serine is further converted to Hydroxypyruvate → Glycerate → PGA → RUBP.
