Photosynthesis in Higher Plants

Chemiosmotic hypothesis

  • This theory was confirmed by Hind.G and Andre at Cornell University.
  • According to this theory, a proton gradient is created by electron transport.
  • The lumen of thylakoid is found excess with H+ ions due to photolysis of water.
  • A proton gradient develops across the thylakoid and hence 2 H+ ions move through the transmembrane channels CF0-CF1 (coupling factors F0 and F1) of the enzyme ATPase.
  • This movement of H+ ions, 2 in number causes the formation of ATP from ADP and Pi
