Dimensional Analysis

  • An expression showing the powers to which the fundamental units are to be raised to obtain one unit of the derived quantity is called dimensional formula of that quantity.
  • Principle of homogeneity states only quantities of same dimensions can be added subtracted and equated. Hence in a physical quantity every term should have same dimensions.
  • Dimensional analysis is used to check the correctness of given equation, to convert one system of units into another system.
  • Dimensional analysis is used to derive the equations showing the relation between different physical quantities.
  • Dimensional analysis is not applicable to trigonometric logarithmic and exponential functions.
