Organic Chemistry: Some basic Principles and Techniques

General Introduction, Shapes of Simple Molecules and Hybridization

Bonding in Organic Compounds :

The organic compounds are carbon compounds consisting of one or more carbon atoms. Carbon must form only covalent bonds by overlapping of atomic orbital of one atom with atomic orbital of another atom. The overlapping is done in two ways:

(1) End to end overlapping
(2) Parallel or Side wise overlapping

Hybridization in Organic Compounds :

The process of mixing atomic orbitals to form a set of new equivalent orbitals is called as hybridization. There are three types of hybridization in organic compounds.

(i) sp3 hybridization(single bonds)
(ii) sp2 hybridization(double bonds)
(iii) sp hybridization(triple bonds)
